Peebles County Cricket Club Won by 64 runs

Match report Victory for Peebles & Biggar U17’s against Gala in the Borders Colts Cup

Following the promotion of both its 1st and 2nd XI teams in the East of Scotland League Peebles County Cricket Club’s 2009 Season finished on another high last Saturday when the Peebles & Biggar under 17 team, the Young Cavaliers, beat Galashiels U17’s by 64 runs in the final of the Borders Colts Cup.

After heavy rain the previous few days Galashiel’s Cricket Club did a tremendous job in getting the ground fit for the final which was played under a dry but cloudy sky.

Alfie Pace the Peebles Captain won the toss and not wishing to chase runs in a pressure situation he elected to bat. After a slow, thoughtful start the Peebles opening batsmen Andrew Harrison (18) and Douglas Voas (retired 33) put on 57 for the first wicket which fell in the 11th over. At the end of their allotted 20 overs Peebles & Biggar finished on 119 for 2 with super contributions from A. Harrison, D.Voas, R. Waddell and A. Maxwell. The pick of the Gala bowlers being K.Mein, G.Ormiston and J.Irvine.

The Galashiels innings got off to a very explosive start with 11 of the first two overs and Peebles & Biggar supporters looked at each other a little worried. But when Alistair Maxwell took the key wicket of Kris Mein in the 3rd over followed by two maidens by Kieran Ramsay worried looks began to disappear. Alfie Pace then dismissed the other Gala opener Gregor Ormiston and Gala were 20 for 2 in the 7th over. A partnership of 17 between Duncan Miller and Rory Hancock took the score to 36. Richard Adams and Alfie Pace got the wickets of the remaining recognised batsmen after which Gala resistance crumbled to a fine bowling and fielding display by the Peebles & Biggar team. Special mentions to Dougie Voas 33 (retired), a catch and two wickets, Ali Maxwell 28 not out , two catches and 1 wicket, Andrew Harrison 18, a catch, run out and only 1 bye, Ross Waddell 26 runs, Richard Adams 3 wickets, Kieran Ramsay 4 overs for 11 including two maidens at a crucial stage, Alfie Pace 3 wickets and winning the toss, great fielding by Jonathan Huntly, Stumpy, Conor McHugh (including 1 catch) and Michael Ainslie (including 1 catch).
