Peebles County Cricket Club 1st XI v Livingston 2nd XI on Sat 31 May 2014 at 13.00
Peebles County Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report For at least a decade Livingston Cricket Club has been something of a bete noir for Peebles County. Old timers, including the author of this column, are unable to remember the last time County defeated Livvy in any match league or cup. The dead hand of history tightened its grip again on County's shoulder as Peebles
lost on Saturday by seven wickets.

Technically this was a home game, but due to the Alec Lucas Memorial and the virtual entire annexation of inner Peebles by the cycling industry the match had been transferred to Cavalry Park, Edinburgh.

Captain Slater won the toss and sent his troops into the field. Murray and Pace hung around long enough to put twenty four on the board before the real action started with two useful partnerships involving Caddick/Murray ..62 ,and then Caddick/Waddell 102. After a measured start Caddick cut loose and took full advantage of any bad bowling which came his way and finished the innings with an excellent ton. The final total of 207 is very often more than enough to win
games at this level. However, there was a lingering suspicion that it was not enough.

County had a very bad day in the field. Their bowling and fielding, which for all of their previous matches this season had been exemplary, was frankly abject.

This in no way should detract from one of the finest innings seen this year by Livvy batsman Jarvis. If Caddick's innings was a fine one, then this was brilliant. Never once were Livvy behind the severe run rate County had set them, and Jarvis displayed a ruthless, murderous indeed, strokeplay which clinched victory for the opposition with seven wickets in hand and the best part of eight overs to spare.Of the bowlers Caddick and Burns emerge with any credit and Joe Slater took an exceptionally difficult catch in the field.

So a defeat but not by any means an unmitigated disaster. County take full batting bonus points and a couple for the wickets they took. Next week they will be back again for the third time at Cavalry to do business with Edinburgh home side Marchmont
