Boroughmuir 2 v Peebles County Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2014 at 13.00
Peebles County Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report County beat Boroughmuir Second XI by six wickets at Meggetland Sports complex, Edin on Saturday. It was their second victory on the road this season, and a timely one after two heavy consecutive home defeats.

A bleak place at the best of times, no-one who had played in this fixture last year could forget the artic conditions that game was played in. The weather was considerably more benign this time and the result more importantly was different. This was the fourth completed game before the end of May, an unusual statistic in itself when one considers the vagaries of Scottish weather at this or any other time of year for that matter.

Captain Slater won the toss and elected to field first; a wise decision given the conditions. It was the first time Peebles had fielded first this season and the outcome suggests that this policy is their best strategy.Last year all of the games they won had been the result of successful run chases having first reduced the opposition to low totals.

This was certainly a most impressive bowling and fielding performance by Peebles. With nearly half of their allotted overs used up, Boroughmuir had scarcely 50 runs on the board. Only one wicket had fallen, but the batsmen who occupied the crease were proving a liability by their reluctance or inability
to get a much needed move on. Maxwell bowled with considerable guile and economy and despite being the best bowler on show, captured the least wickets, in his case just the one.

Then the wickets did start to tumble as all the other bowlers: Slater, Caddick and Rimmer produced good spells. Rimmer is to be congratulated on winning a cap with five wickets. As in previous games this season(and this is a trend which
one hopes will continue) County excelled themselves in the field with their catching. Wicket-keeper Pace,in addition to a tidy stint behind the stumps, pulled off a quite brilliant low catch, and Cormack and Burns clung on to the
two tricky chances that came their way. B'muir were all out for 82,hardly a score to induce trepidation into the opposition.

There was little real doubt that County would win this game. After a run of dismal and disappointing scores, Murray produced a polished innings of 39 and in conjuction with Caddick,20 not out, steered County to victory with a partnership of 60.
