Peebles County Cricket Club 1st XI v Edin South 2 on Sat 27 Jul 2013 at 13.00
Peebles County Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Peebles County continued their erratic progress in the ESCA with a five-wicket win over Edinburgh South 2nd XI at the Gytes on saturday afternoon.Several key players were absent due to injury and vacation, and to their great credit County
lifted their game to meet the enforced challenges.

Acting captain Burns had no hesitation in inserting the opposition when he won the toss and this by now tried-and-tested formula produced the desired result. South never looked comfortable against County's bowlers, and apart from one innings of 44,it was hard to believe that this was a side near the top of the league and the only one to date to have beaten leaders and odds-on promotion favourites Selkirk.

Without exception all County's bowlers produced excellent spells. South's final total of 110 all out did not appear intimidating, but County know only too well how these sort of games can go awry.

The Met.Office's prediction of heavy rain around 4.30 proved unnervingly accurate and 4 overs and one wicket into County's innings the deluge arrived. After an hour's wait, during which there was much deliberation, mutual self-interest prevailed and play resumed:South needed the points to keep alive their promotion aspirations,County to move out of the drop zone.

It wasn't long before Peebles were again in that nightmarish "Groundhog
Day" loop as wickets fell.Opening batter Murray watched patiently as five of his colleagues headed back to the pavilion, unnecessarily it must be said. This only served to strengthen his resolve to stay at the crease and grind out the runs. Indeed,he displayed an almost Boycott-like tenacity not to yield his wicket as he accumulated a vital 39 not out.

The star run-getter proved to be Maxwell.Joining Murray at the crease when there was still a lot to do,Maxwell defended his wicket admirably and produced some imperious stroke-play to bolster the run-chase.

Together the two men took County over the line with 5 wickets to spare and ten overs remaining. A comfortable result on paper but certainly not without a few anxious moments.

This was a timely victory.Four remaining fixtures(weather permitting)two at home, and two against sides County have beaten this season must give cause for optimism.
