Boroughmuir 2 v Peebles County Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 04 May 2013 at 13.00
Peebles County Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report by Paul Murray.

County lost away on Saturday to Boroughmuir Second XI by seven wickets in a high scoring game at Colinton Road. It was their second consecutive defeat of the new season, but unlike the first at Selkirk, this was a dramatic and highly competitive match which Peebles will regret not having won. The weather was unremittingly windy with a viciously cold edge, but the ground, a very bleak and exposed place at the best of times, was not visited by the rain, sleet and snow which ravaged other areas of Alba.

Batting first County posted the extremely impressive total of 215 for nine in their 45 overs, this was due to two imperious innings by former Peebles superstar Darren Chatt making a guest appearance 68,and his son Jordan who scored 93 not out in an innings of high technical ability and style which defied his youth and inexperience at senior level. Father and son put on well over a hundred runs together before Chatt pere injured his back essaying a sweep shot and was out soon after. The foundations for a big total were in place, and Chatt fils continued the good work with useful assistance from Slater and Cormack.

At tea, County could feel justifiably pleased with the outcome, but there was unease that their eleventh player and opening bowler had so far contrived not to turn up for the game. It is rare at this level that the team batting second, and having endured such inclement weather, surpasses a total of over 200 but, to Boroughmuir's great credit, this is what they did.

Handicapped by the non-arrival of the eleventh man and without their explosive captain, the fragility of County's bowling attack was exposed right from the start as they allowed the opposition to score consistently at the required rate without losing wickets.

Last week defending a paltry 65,the bowling and fielding were sharp and keen. On Saturday the creative edge seems to have been blunted by complacency, in all human affairs the enemy of success. Mention must be made of a brave spell of bowling by Cormack who did manage to dislodge two of the opposition but at some considerable cost. For about seven overs County did manage to contain the run-rate, but they did not take wickets and the infuriatingly the game moved away from them although it was not over until the penultimate over.

So, many positives other than the full 20 points emerge, although County will rue missing out on a victory. It was if nothing else a chance to gauge the probable standard of opposition they will encounter in this league. Last week's defeat at the hands of a rampant, resurgent Selkirk was not a reflection of the
real quality of Division 5.
