Dunbar v Peebles County Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00pm
Peebles County Cricket Club Lost

Match report This needle match was blunted by Dunbar’s middle order tonkers and the failure of P2’s top order batsmen. Without a flawless innings from Michael Ainslie, supported by The Swanster's contemptuous talent, the visitors might have succumbed to a total less than embarrassing.

Dunbar won the toss and decided to bat. Atwell, bowling from the railway end, dismissed Scott Callow with his first ball. Robert Duff and Dave Dickinson rallied, but slowly. After 10 overs they had made less than 20, which only complimented the accuracy of P2’s attack - The Black Lightning and Kie Ramsay. After Duff was taken out by Swanny, Dougy Humphrey and Dickinson, who might be described as a cow corner specialist, started to pile on the runs. The Sandy Man was more expensive than usual, possibly because the artificial wicket did not suit him, and being short of a fifth recognised bowler Nathaniel Buckingham was brought in to confuse the opposition with his windmill action, which he did only too successfully by mesmerising Dickinson into missing a straight one and having Andrew (son of Scott) Callow caught at long mid-on. The real damage, however, was done by Chris Greco’s superior slogging and carrot-topped Robbie Miller’s elegant boundaries. The final score of 224 was daunting, but not impossible on such a good batting track.

P2’s specialist stroke players were sliced and diced by Dickinson’s medium-to-fast cutters. Three ducks and a failed attempt to get a move on from the skipper left hope wriggling in a pit of despair, until… The Swanster opened his account with two 4s and a 6. At No 7, young Michael A strode to the wicket with the confidence of a Test player and set about the Dunbar bowlers with tenacious zeal. He never made a mistake and hit ten 4s and a 6 in his memorable innings. It was more than a revelation; it was a joy to watch. Their thrilling partnership was eventually broken when The Swanster holed out on the square leg boundary and a few overs later Michael let one of Humphrey’s low bouncers through the gap. After that it was a slow walk to the gallows, except for The Black Lightning who confounded everyone with a well executed, entertaining perfomance, before slipping in mid shot and being hit on the kneecap. As he writhed in pain, the uncaring umpire (one of P2s dutiful servants of fair play) gave him out - KBW.
