Peebles County Cricket Club 2nd XI v Edinburgh South 2nd XI on Sat 14 Aug 2010 at 1.00pm
Peebles County Cricket Club Won

Match report An historic innings by P2’s loyal compatriot, The Swanster, ably supported by the junior member of the OAP club, ensured a great victory over Edinburgh South 2, who, at the time, was standing second in Div 7.

Winning the toss was vital and Angus WM achieved this and put them in on a damp, pudding pitch. Runs were hard to come by because of the slowness of the track and yet, despite accurate bowling from Niall Burns and Kie Ramsay the first wicket fell (run out) when the score was 25. A number of sitter catches went down and memories of early defeats due to buttered fingers clouded the minds of those who had suffered such losses in the past. The Sandy Man started with a maiden and a wicket maiden, while The Swanster gave away only 13 runs in his nine overs. Robert Russell’s left arm flighters continued in the same vein before he had to come off, due to his age (14). For the opposition, only James Mollard understood that the way to beat a pitch that turned stroke play into a lottery was to slog it over the top. After a magnificent diving catch by young Robert and a frustrating final stand by the wily veteran Gerry Dodson and Kshitiz Tiwari, EdS2’s innings ended on 117, which might well have been a winning score.

P2 started on snail time. Angus WM could not penetrate the off-side ring and found himself tied up by Eric Foggit’s dobbly spinners. Jules the Tools was unfortunate when he swung at a full toss above waist height and was caught at wide mid on. The square leg umpire had signed a no-ball, but, as EdS2’s skipper, Jim Brims, insisted, it is the other umpire who must make the decision, “in consultation with his colleague,” and since the umpire at the bowler’s end had declared it out, Jules had to walk. Michael Ainslie hit a couple of lovely drives straight to fielders before succumbing to the temptation of an aggressive shot. When Angus WM did exactly the same thing next over, desperate to move things along, the scorecard read “3 for 11 after 12.2 overs.” And then The Swanster took charge and, without mercy, stormed ahead, hitting two 6s and eight 4s in his unbeaten 63. George Thornton accompanied him with flawless support. Without the loss of another wicket P2s won with 14 overs to spare.
