Peebles County Cricket Club 2nd XI v Dunbar on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm
Peebles County Cricket Club Lost

Match report The Peebles wicket had been cut and rolled to within an inch of its life and yet still behaved so badly it should have been dug up and flung into the Tweed.

P2 took the brunt. By the time Dunbar batted after tea the fire had gone out of it. At first, however, the ball was leaping from a length, or skidding low. The polite word was unpredictable. The truth was something else. In the early stages of the home side’s innings Nathaniel Buckingham played with great confidence. Kim WM, after a nervous few overs, started going for his shots. This partnership looked strong as the score raced into the 70s. And then a callow, red-headed youth by the name of Robbie Miller came on first change, bowling leg breaks and googlies. There were enough loose ones to seduce the batsmen into suicidal thoughts and, every now and again, a perfectly flighted delivery. It was one of these that tempted Nat the Buck to leap down the wicket, take a massive swipe, miss and hear the keeper rattle his bails. Kim followed shortly afterwards and then the rest fell like ninepins.

Dunbar’s Nigel Binnie was a man in form. Previously he had made a century and an 80 and here he was, ready to knock off P2’s meagre total in a trice. Shas Ramzan can be fierce, as well as dangerously fast. Binnie didn’t look happy against him, but it was Scott Callow, his opening partner, who had his stumps rearranged on the third ball. Duncan Tossell was lucky to survive a skyer of a catch at mid-wicket before settling into an erratic, but effective, match winning innings. Eventually, Binnie holed out into mothering hands of Niall Burns at deep extra cover. After that it was a matter of watching hope slowly die. Lofty bowled well for the full nine, although Niall was expensive. Having only four bowlers on board, there might have been a prob when the fifth was required. As it was, second change Rich Adams only had time to complete 1.3 overs before Dunbar clinched it.

Despite another mauling, P2 enjoyed the sunshine and the sandwiches.
