Peebles County Cricket Club 2nd XI v West Lothian 3rd XI on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm
Peebles County Cricket Club Lost

Match report P2 were soundly thrashed by a superior team that left them disorientated and disheartened. Mistakes were made – opting to field first proved pivotal as the wicket became more unpredictable as the day went on – and luck was not on their side, which does not excuse a disappointing batting performance from (on paper) a strong XI.

West Lothian 3’s strength in depth shattered any illusions amongst Whitestone Park optimists after Kieran Ramsay had Alan Whitton caught behind in the first over. Kevin Smith, at No 3, is a class act. His 89 was flawlessly executed in the style of a trained assassin. Later he skied a ball to mid on which went straight through a hapless fielder (name withheld to protect the reputation of a favourite son), but it made little difference. WL3 were on a roll, taking risks and getting away with them. Ali Napoli, at No 6, played with the arrogance of youth and was unlucky to be caught within a gasp of 50. His was a cheeky, sparkling innings. After that Pat Bennie gave a demo of uncontrolled slogging that evaded the packed boundaries, which only goes to show that fortune favours the brave. In the bowling dept, Kie Ramsay, for the first time, was off form. Niall Burns and The Russell Brothers proved expensive while Rich Adams (3 for 34) and Swanny (2 for 40) retained a flicker of pride from this walk on the tame side of Humiliation Street. Mentioned in dispatches: Jules the Tools and Robert the Younger for executing perfect full stretch catches, worthy of an Olympic gymnastic event.

P2’s top four batsmen fell to an eagerness to push the score on, an unnecessary run out, a dodgy LBW and a wide long hop cutting back to clip the outside of the leg stump. Swanny and Murray P held steady for a while before The Swanster gloved a good delivery from 16-year-old Jake Percival into the hands of the keeper. MP hung in there, slashing his trademark cuts through the covers, until he missed a straight one from Slogger Pat, after which the tail attempted to wag, with Rich A showing the most confidence and style. Mistake No 44: why was he going in so late?
