Fauldhouse 2nd XI v Peebles County Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 29 May 2010 at 1.00pm
Peebles County Cricket Club Won

Match report Rain clouds circled Fauldhouse like black ash from Iceland’s furious mountain. The sense of impending doom did not affect defeat-stained P2. Morale has remained high throughout the lean weeks, when catches hit the floor too often and their captain continued to lead by failure. Not any more. Has the worm turned? The taste of victory is sweet on the lips after bitter disappointments poisoned the well.

Fauldhouse 2 won the toss and decided to field. Later it became obvious why. Their bowling was stronger than their batting by a considerable margin. Michael and Jordan Kelly (brothers) complimented each other well. Michael bowled flat out, too fast to see movement in the air, with a potentially deadly off cutter. Jordan was slower, a prodigious swinger of the ball, who managed to achieve bounce from a good length. Murray P and Swanny fell to Michael’s yorker, while Jordan bowled Tools round his legs. After last week’s debacle, P2’s skip Angus WM, The Man That Time Forgot, applied himself to the business in hand. His innings was workmanlike, steady, unflashy, definitely a best supporting role to lead actors Dave Adams and Michael Ainsley, who played with élan, hitting the ball cleanly, timed to perfection. Dave A was unlucky to be LBW, hooking a ball from James Mildren that did not get up, while Michael A was still standing at the close, having performed for the second time this season a dazzling low order cameo.

Jon McCosh’s first over was heavy with wides, less goosey loosey than unleashed wildcat. He settled after a while and took three important wickets, one of which was a scorching catch at slip by Safe Hands Swanster, who did not bowl himself, due to a painful neck injury. Jon’s fellow opener, Rich A, was (as usual) extremely unlucky not to get a touch – batsmen played and missed constantly – and wrapped up the innings by enticing 13-year-old Darren Allan to hit a short ball straight into the hands of Kim WM at mid-wicket. The fielding was impressive with three catches behind the stumps from No Byes Pace and surprising agility in the deep from Murray P. However, the star of the show, once again, was Kieran Ramsay, whose 4 for 25 startled F2’s batsmen with its clinical precision. Niall Burns, back from two weeks hols, may have been more expensive but he looked fresh and dangerous. Only F2’s skip Ronnie Currie put up a spirited defence with a demo of controlled slogging before snicking one from Kie into the gloves of the man who never lets a ball go by.

Only nine wickets were required for the vic, thanks to Michael K who walked off the ground in a huff after a spat with his dad (also playing) and didn’t come back. Such are the dramas of Div 7.
